Stakeholder Engagement in Greenland

Stakeholder Engagement in Greenland

Wherever we operate, Cairn recognises that its activities can potentially impact the people, community and lifestyles of those affected by our activities. In response, we engage with all affected or interested parties.

Subject to the approval of the Greenlandic Government, Cairn will carry out an offshore drilling programme in the Disko West area of Greenland during the second half of 2010.

As part of a joint industry and Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum (BMP) initiative to raise awareness along the coast of the Disko West area, public meetings were initially held in 2008 to inform the local population about potential oil and gas activities and their potential impact on them and the environment. The key issues raised by the communities, which included emergency plans in the event of accidents, access to employment opportunities and the potential impacts on their fishing industry, were recorded and used during ongoing consultation with authorities and those directly impacted or involved with survey and seismic activities in 2009. No formal grievances or concerns were recorded throughout our 2009 programme of activities.

Both an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) are required by the Greenlandic authorities for the drilling programme. These assessments help to:

  • identify both positive and negative social impacts at both the local and national level;
  • provide the opportunity for all relevant stakeholders to engage in consultations and public hearings;
  • optimise positive impacts and mitigate negative impacts from the activities throughout the project lifetime; and
  • develop a Benefit and Impact Plan for implementation of the Impact Benefit Agreement for the duration of our activities in the region.

A series of data-gathering consultations have informed the development of the SIA, which will be presented in March 2010, after which more public hearings will be conducted and the Impact Benefit Agreement signed before the project is approved.
