Environment

We recognise that our exploration, development and production activities have an impact on the environment so our goal is, wherever possible, to avoid, mitigate or at the very least manage any negative impacts our operations have on the environment.

Utilising tools such as Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, we assess, manage and monitor our environmental risks in line with the principles of the international environmental management standard ISO14001 and follow a precautionary approach to environmental challenges such as climate change.

We also:

  • strive to prevent pollution by monitoring and managing our air emissions, effluents and wastes, energy use and water consumption against annual targets;
  • comply with applicable legal, regulatory and licence requirements;
  • regularly review our spill contingency plans for our offshore production and drilling activities; and
  • understand and manage potential biodiversity risks across our activities.

Our 2009 Highlights:

  • Acquisition in Greenland of significant information on health, safety and environmental challenges, as well as biodiversity, ice and weather data, providing vital input to the planning of the 2010 drilling programme and the associated EIAs.
  • Completion of survey activities without environmental incidents and preparations for drilling in 2010 in Greenland.
  • Completion of a seismic survey offshore Albania without environmental incident.
  • Completion of a geotechnical borehole that was completed offshore Tunisia without environmental incident.
  • All Rajasthan camp and project sites have established waste management facilities and waste tracking and disposal procedures.
  • Consent to Establish (CTE) obtained for all pipeline facilities up to Salaya and for exploration well in KG Block in India.
  • Sri Lanka seismic survey EIA approved by Government of Sri Lanka.
