To track the efficiency of our operations, we track our direct energy consumption, including the use of gas, diesel and oil for our exploration and production operations, and our indirect energy consumption through the use of purchased electricity or renewable energy.
Our energy consumption per tonne of hydrocarbon produced varies from year to year, and depends on the extent of our exploration and production activities at the time.
In 2009, our direct, indirect and total energy consumption levels have increased in Cairn India and decreased slightly in the rest of the business. The energy efficiency of our activities has, however, deteriorated slightly both in Cairn India and across the rest of business from 0.47 to 0.54 GJ per tonne of hydrocarbon produced in Cairn India and 0.77 to 0.79 GJ per tonne of hydrocarbon produced for the rest of the business. This is equivalent to 56% of the industry benchmark of 1.4, which was last reported by the OGP in 2008.
However we are working on new initiatives such as the installation of new energy-efficient steam turbines in the MPT in Rajasthan. The MPT also uses a closed-loop system of steam recovery for its heating requirements.
