Cairn contributes to the local communities in which it operates through its business activities, and by providing energy, infrastructure, employment and trade with local enterprises. In addition, we have also added value through focused social investment.
Our community development strategies are designed to be implemented through consultation and partnership with local authorities, NGOs and other interested parties, at country, district and local levels.
For example, in Bangladesh, we have been supporting community-based projects located close to our Sangu production plant for a number of years. They include the Marine Fisheries Conservation Project, run in partnership with the Bangladesh Centre for Village Development, and the Chillimpur community adolescent project, delivered in association with MAMATA, a local NGO, which includes skill development training for unemployed youths, health workshops and start-up support for new businesses.
Cairn India also runs a number of community and social development projects to support the communities around its production and development sites. The Company works closely with the district authorities to help improve local infrastructure, renovate school buildings and libraries, and provide equipment for schools and training for teachers.
Cairn India's ongoing partnership with the IFC, through which we design, fund and deliver sustainable development programmes in Barmer, Rajasthan, has with the support of the Government of Rajasthan led to an Enterprise Centre being established to promote local economic development and training, a project to support rural families in the local dairy industry, and a child and maternal health awareness initiative.
